Abstract
Conducting polymer (CP)-based nanocomposites, engineered at the nanoscale, provide highly adaptable gas-sensing platforms with customisable mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties. Filler dispersion, morphology, interfacial bonding, porosity, and energy-level alignment all influence performance, with literature demonstrating that heterojunctions reduce detection limits from ppm to sub-ppb. Porous structures reduce response times to less than 10 s. Combining CPs like polyaniline, polypyrrole, and PEDOT with nanofillers like metal oxides, carbon nanostructures, MXenes, and MOFs improves charge transfer, active surface area, and analyte-specific interactions. Emerging advances AI-assisted real-time sensing, green synthesis that reduces VOC emissions by more than 90%, and multifunctional platforms with rapid, selective detection make CP nanocomposites promising candidates for scalable, high- performance sensors in industrial, biomedical, and environmental monitoring applications.
