Abstract
To ascertain the extent of metabolic changes in fish exposed to chemicals in aquatic environments, this study assessed the metabolic activity in Sarotherodon melanotheron exposed to Butachlor at different doses of 0.00 (control), 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 mg/L. During the experiment, six indicators of water quality were measured: temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nitrite, and ammonia. In all, 180 S. melanotheron were utilized in the study, 60 of which were divided into each of the three fish size categories. Following the experiment, the fish's blood samples were obtained, and standard laboratory procedures were used to look at their metabolite profiles. The study's findings showed that whereas creatinine, total bilirubin, and total protein values were significantly lower (P<0.05) in the exposed fish, urea levels were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the exposed fish when compared to control values. The juvenile fish that had been exposed to the toxin, however, displayed more evidence of these modifications. The baseline data provided by this work may be useful for future comparative studies of metabolic stress in aquatic biota from contaminated coastal habitats and for effective aquatic biota bio-monitoring.
