Abstract
A method is described for determining the copper ion in tap water. The absorbance is measured at 606 nm, the molar absorptivity of the colored complex is 1.9 x 104 L/mol.cm, and the Beer-Lambert law is valid for copper concentrations up to 30µg/25 ml. The color of the complex is stable for at least 6 hours. Microgram amounts of copper can be determined with an accuracy of better than ± 1.6% and a relative standard deviation of <2.1%. The ions normally present in samples do not interfere when NaF, KCl, Na2SO4, and citric acid are added as masking agents. Tap water has been analyzed by this method, and the results were satisfactory when compared with the standard methods of sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate atomic absorption spectrophotometer (A.A.S.) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICAP).
