Abstract
We consider the topographic bias in gravimetric geoid determination when analytically downward continuing the topographic potential from the Earth’s surface or above down to sea level. The total bias is subdivided into those of the Bouguer shell or plate and the terrain. In this process the potential of the Bouguer shell always causes a bias, which increases with the square of the topographic height and typically exceeds 1-2 cm for elevations higher than 1 km.

The concept Topographic Bias (TB) in geoid determination was introduced by Sjoberg [1], implying that the analytical or harmonic Downward Continuation (DWC) of the external (disturbing) potential of the Earth through topographic masses to sea-level is biased. This is, for example, the case in the KTH method for geoid determination [2], and the so-called Remove-Compute-Restore technique [2], when the topographic density distribution is only partly known. In the treatment of the topographic effect, it is convenient to decompose the topography into the Bouguer shell (or plate) and the remaining part, the terrain [3]. Sjoberg [4], put at doubt whether the terrain correction is needed, which was investigated in several successive papers [5-8], leading to both some reasonable but also some questionable results. More conclusive results were obtained recently by studying the DWC process using point masses [9, 10]. A summary of today’s understanding of the DWC issue of the topographic potential and the related TBs for the Bouguer shell and terrain are summarized in Sect. 2, and in Sects. 3-5 we test this theory for homogeneous cylinders and cones, followed by conclusions and final remarks in Sect 6.
