Clinical Efficacy of Music-Based Interventions (MBIs) for the Elderly with Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment

Abstract

In recent aged countries, the elderly has more dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Authors have been involved in music therapy and Integrative medicine (IM) for long, and recent topics or evidences for clinical efficacy of music-based interventions (MBIs) were investigated. MBIs seem to contribute the improvement of anxiety, depression and agitation from several reports of meta-analysis with randomized controlled trials (RCTs). By the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the first line of therapy for distress behaviors in dementia care would be non-pharmacological and psychosocial interventions such as MBIs.
