Abstract

The pattern of relationship between school adjustment, peer influence, parenting processes, school efficacy, and substance abuse among adolescents was examined in this study using a descriptive survey of correlational design and a multistage sampling procedure. Adolescents from mainstream secondary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria, took part in the study. The results revealed that school adjustment, peer influence, and parenting processes all had a signsificant positive relationship with substance abuse. In contrast, school efficacy had a negative significant relationship with substance abuse. Peer influence made the most significant contribution, followed by school adjustment, parental processes, and school efficacy, respectively. The study concluded that efforts should be made to reduce substance abuse, while appropriate strategies should be put in place.
