Our research group has been engaged in clinical practice and research in psychosomatic medicine for years. One of our research area is conducting transactional analysis (TA) to examine individual personality traits and characteristics [1]. Utilizing the Tokyo University?egogram (TEG), we can evaluate various egograms from younger generation to the elderly, to understand their own social and communication skills [2]. Obtaining the necessary knowledge and result can contribute to the formation of smooth interpersonal relationships in our society [3].

The other research area is conducting research using VibraImage [4]. People usually develop unconscious head micro-vibrations, and then analyzing high-resolution video images can infer psychological background [5]. We have already conducted clinical applications of Charism Judge, and extensive data research has been underway [6].

We have continued various investigations concerning these two area. Among the subjects analyzed using both methods, we recently experienced interesting results in an elderly Japanese man. His egogram analysis revealed excellent communication skills, and he achieved a rare result with a very high score on the Charism Judge. This paper presents this case and discusses it from various perspectives.

This case was 89-years old man at present, who had worked at bank until he was 60. After that, he spent his days enjoying his favorite hobbies and cultural activities, including painting, haiku, karaoke, and ballroom dancing. At that time, he joined the New Elderly Association (NEA), that was founded by Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara of St. Luke's International Hospital. Since then, his range of social activities has expanded.

He participated in research groups and seminars on integrative medicine, psychosomatic medicine, music therapy, and other topics, enjoying learning about a wide range of cultures. He also served as an organizer and leader at NEA (Figure 1). He continues to be involved in a wide range of activities, including flower arranging, calligraphy, watercolor painting, and lectures.

When he was 80 years old, he published a culture book "Uzushio," meaning uzu=vortex, shio=tide, and uzushio=whirlpools. The reason include the fact that he lives in Naruto city, Tokushima, Japan, and Naruto has one of the 3 most famous whirlpools in the world. This book has the collection of his paintings, watercolors, calligraphy, waka poetry, and haiku (Figure 2). It was also distributed to NEA branches nationwide.

1) TEG Results

The TEG has five factors. His egogram results showed a good balance of the factors, which are critical parent, nurturing parent, adult, free child and adapted child. This type belongs to the "caring type" (NP dominant) category, where the person with this type can adapt well to surrounding situations in any company or organization in Japan for years (Figure 3).

2) Charism Judge

The total point showed 244.8, which is very higher position as the elite level in the ordinary population (Figure 4). In detail, Talent (including the factors of stability, leadership, and Vitality (#3) and Passion (#4) are all high, and Perseverance (#5) showed an ideal A level. The shape of the frequency histogram (#6) revealed symmetrical with a clear peak and a narrow width from side to side, that indicates generally almost close to the ideal situation.

For the past 5 years, he has worked as a volunteer tourist guide for Naruto city, where he has enjoyed communicating with the many tourists who visit the city (Figure 5a). As an interesting episode, an Italian visitor once complimented him, saying "the Naruto Strait is even more beautiful than the Strait of Messina in Italy." The author hopes that the Naruto Strait with whirlpool will be designated a World Heritage Site.

As a famous Japanese cultural calligraphy, there is a phrase that expresses the wish for happiness and wellness of everyone: "Zui-jitsu-sho-un” meaning the clouds that bring auspicious sunlight and good fortune (Figure 5b)."

To learn the international trends in information and communication technology (ICT), he enrolled in the ICT educational course at Tokushima Prefectural Silver College in 2024 summer. This public education system is for people aged 55 and over. At the 43rd entrance ceremony, he gave a speech on behalf of the 487 new students, because he was the oldest of the all 487 students. It was broadcasted in the news of TV program (Figure 6).

This elderly man has learned the precious philosophy of Hinohara-ism in the activities of NEA, and creative activities and volunteer work have been his passion [7]. He continued to lead his daily life style along with the recommendation of Dr. Hinohara [8].

TEG showed the NP dominant type as caring type [9]. The personality is characterized by being considerate, caring, responsible, moderately objective, kind and reliable, enjoying things appropriately, compromising appropriately, affirming himself and others [10]. When he looked at the results himself, he felt that they were generally consistent.

From current situation of Charism judge, it seems to be simple and useful for psychological evaluation method  [11]. Various results of Charism Judge would be influenced by keeping highly energetic and enjoying every day [12]. It is also said that a wide range of activities such as haiku, calligraphy, painting, music, and volunteering for local tourism also have a positive effect [13]. Cerebral function suggests that the right brain, which is responsible for art, may be more active than the left brain, which is normally used for work [14].

The previous highest score of Charism Judge was 248.5 point in middle age of female, and 254.2 point in young college student [15]. Compared with their data, the results of this elderly case would be fascinating. The reason for the high point may be from his lifestyle, psychologically persisting curiosity, good communication skill with other people, and positively progressing mind [16].

Charism judge evaluation has been useful in psychosomatic medicine, and we have continued various research for this theme. Current case is an elderly man who showed high point (244.8) as elite category. This was probably due to the characteristics of the caring type on the egogram, his ideal continuing lifestyle habits, and psychologically positive approach to the life. It is expected that this report will become a useful resource, where we have gradually transition to the Charisma Quotient (CQ).
