Abstract

A Young Man's Indiscriminate Murderous Intent (2002)” and use this case to explore “delusions and behaviors-like symptoms of schizophrenia” in young people. In the written and oral statements of the young man who were the subjects of this research, as the fundamental problems in his independence worsened, his “preoccupations” with the problem and the “narrowing of the field of consciousness” intensified, and above the delusions and behavior also worsened.

Introduction

Following Spranger's “verstehen”, I will examine my research on “A Young Man's Indiscriminate Murderous Intent (2002)” and use this case to explore “delusions and behaviors-like symptoms of schizophrenia” in young people. In the written and oral statements of the young man who were the subjects of this research, as the fundamental problems in his independence worsened, his “preoccupations” with the problem and the “narrowing of the field of consciousness” intensified, and above the delusions and behavior also worsened. When the entire problem is largely resolved, his preoccupations with the problem disappeared significantly, the field of consciousness expanded, and delusions and behaviors-like symptoms of schizophrenia largely disappeared. Looking back on the symptom-like delusions, there are also utterances from his delusional phase, which are preventing him from acting out his heartfelt murderous intent. Based on these facts, I have taken the opinion that above the symptom-like delusions and behavior in this case are due to the fundamental problem in his independence and are not literally the symptom of schizophrenia. I have attempted to examine above mentioned the opinion and research case (2002) through a detailed review of the statement and oral statement in the research case (2002) mentioned above and the opinion based on this case. It is no exaggeration to say that the results of these reviews and examinations clearly show that the opinion and research case (2002) mentioned above are appropriate.

Problem

Following Spranger's “verstehen”, I will examine the study of “A Young Man's Indiscriminate Murderous Intent (2002)”?I will focus on the following points in the written (descriptive) statements and oral statements of the young man in this study case. “The young man's fundamental problem in becoming independent 1” worsens. As this worsens, the young man's “preoccupations 2” with the problem and “narrowing of his field of consciousness 3” intensify, and “his delusions and behaviors-like symptoms of schizophrenia 4” also worsen. When the problem was resolved, the preoccupations with the problem disappeared significantly, the field of consciousness expanded greatly, and these delusions and behaviors also largely disappeared. In addition, there are oral statements from this young man during his delusional period in which he reflects on his delusions and tries to suppress his murderous behavior.

From the above matters, I have taken the opinion that these “symptom-like delusions and behaviors” stem from the fundamental problem in the young man's independence and are not literally symptoms of schizophrenia. I will examine above my opinion and research (2002) in detail using this case, primarily “oral and written statements 5” from this research (2002). 1: This young man has no friends, he can't trust my family, and he is extremely worried about his future (career and marriage) (consulted in July 1996). Next, I will give examples of written statements and oral statements that specifically express the mechanism of this young person's fundamental problems, and list excerpts from these (hereafter, when the written statements and oral statements are discussed in this text, this format will be used). First, I will list the written statements. B (6. Even if I couldn't trust the country or society, I wanted to at least trust my family. However, the extreme decadence of social customs has infiltrated the home, and I can no longer trust even my family. Adultery and compensated dating are trying to destroy my family.) C (At best, an immature person like me can only hang on - no longer even that is allowed. That's why I want to die. - It would be better to die than to become a slave to a computer), D (I want to take revenge on the barbarian Japanese woman who discriminates against me and then die, and my urge to kill is growing stronger each day. I've begun to think that if I were truly alone, killing someone wouldn't be such a big deal. There's no way I'd be able to survive in the future, with no abilities or talents whatsoever.), A (Those without computers are not “human”. I'm a rebel who doesn't use the Internet → I'm not a “human“. I distrust all human beings → I want to eradicate all human beings from the Earth).

The written Statement A appears to be a memo on the concept of statement B, but from this description I could see that this young man was preoccupied by the fundamental issues and his field of consciousness was narrowing as he wrote this.

Next, the following are listed from the oral statements that concretely express the mechanism of the young man's fundamental problem. B (My mother often stays overnight at the store.---If I could date a girl like that, everything would blow away, I would be able to get away, but all the girls I like are already dating, and there is no room for me.), C (A “kogyaru”-looking junior high school girl came up to me at my part-time job.  She was rude, I wanted to smash her if I had an iron bar. There are only people like that. My future (marriage) is bleak. All the girls I like are bad. I can't forgive people who have affairs), D (I hear junior high school girls talking about how there are no good men. and I can't concentrate on my work, so in my head I murder them brutally with an axe or an iron bar. These days, my mother doesn't come home even on Sundays. Even though the store is closed. Even if I get married, I'm worried that my partner will have an affair...I've given up on marriage.)?G (She treated me and my father like trash, so I want to get revenge and die. My mother is bad.), H (I don't mind dying right now.

  • This world is a sexual hell. I want to die because I'm powerless and not needed.), J (I can't trust my mother. My braid are no longer my idol but my enemy. I am being betrayed. I hate the braid. My mother wouldn't be affected if I died. I am the nuisance in the house.), etc.
  • A mental phenomenon in which one thinks of things only from one's own perspective, clings to this way of thinking, and becomes immersed and buried in one's inner world.
  • A mental phenomenon in which the things that appear in one's mind, or the range of ways of looking at and thinking about things, become narrower.
  • Written (descriptive) Statements D, and oral statements D (see Note 1), F (On a TV show, the master of ceremonies said that the culprit was a serious person who couldn't date women. ... I'm offended I would never kill a child. In my heart, I wanted to do it, but I held myself back my pride holds me back. I'm scared of what would happen if a kogyaru hurt me. The Kobe culprit couldn't hold himself back. I'll hold myself back. Kogyaru are different. I want kogyaru killed. – Kogyaru appear in commercials. Kogyaru have the media on their side. That's why they have power and are rampant. When it comes to Kogyals, grab a block and hit them hard, die you right, kogyaru.
  • The oral and written statements of this young man, which are the basis of this paper's comprehension and the subject of its analysis and consideration, are quoted from the material published in “A Young Man's Indiscriminate Murderous Intent” (2002). The oral and written statements of this young person were presented in detail in a digital poster at the 87th Conference of the Japanese Psychological Association in 2024.
  • In the text that follows, except for “-” in certain terms, “-”indicates omissions made by me (the author of this article).

Methods

The subjects of the “Indiscriminate Murderous Intent of a Young Man” (2002) study (reconstructed the 2000 study), which this study attempts to examine, were a university student (19 years old), he lived in a boarding house in 1996. This 2002 study targeted working adults (this man) up to the age of 25.

The main places for counseling and guidance were classrooms during his university days, and after graduation over the phone or at family restaurants. During his university days, he also provided guidance through multiple classes.

As I mentioned in the “Problem” section, I have raised my opinion of the “delusions and behaviors-like symptoms of schizophrenia”. This opinion will be examined in detail using the method described in the “problem” section, and this my opinion and research (2002) will be examined closely.

I tried to conduct a detailed literature search (medical journal, J-Stage, Nii, etc.). However, apart from my past research, I was unable to find any literature closely related to this study. I presented the process of my search at the 87thAnnual Meeting of the Japanese Psychological Association mentioned and presented it in detail in a digital poster.

Regarding approval from the ethics committee of the university: Since I have left the university, I am unable to apply to the ethics committee of this university according to its regulations. Therefore, this research has not been approved by the ethics committee of the university to which I belonged.

Regarding ethics and informed consent in this study. On May 11, 2002, I made a promise with Mr. O (the subject of the study) that if anything that he could not be handled arose, while reviewing the draft of the above study (2002), he would consult with me. At that time, I explained to Mr. O that I would be presenting the study at research meetings and other events, as a way of supporting him, confirming the research, and assuming responsibility for it, and I received his consent. After that, I opened the door to Mr. O's heart and continued to watch over him with the idea that I should not trample on his heart.

As of May 11th, as mentioned above, although the consent to the presentation had been obtained, the presentations of this research outside of this workshop were at the “proposal “stage, with details yet to be determined. This research has entered the draft stage. To explain this and to encourage him to marry a female relative if he was single, I visited Mr. O's home, workplace, and government office But I couldn't find him. There was also the oral statement of his intention to leave his mother and change jobs, and he ended the unwanted relationship and started on the path of independence with a new mindset. I am considering searching for Mr. O's whereabouts, respecting his wishes and paying close attention to his privacy. I started this research on August 19, 2023 and ended on October 31, 2024. The preparation and research period for this submission from January 22nd to February 5th, 2025

Results and Discussion

I will attempt this research in accordance with the matters stated in the “Problem” and “Method”. Based on the matters focused on in the “Problem”, I have narrowed the focus of this research to following things. “worsening of the fundamental problem in becoming independent and worsening of delusions and behavior like symptoms of schizophrenia ” “triggering the murderous intent, suppression of turning the murderous intent into an act, and suppressing delusions containing murderous intent” “improving/disappearing the delusions and behavior-like symptoms of schizophrenia”. Through these investigations, I will examine the opinion I have stated in the “Problem” and examine these opinion and the research (2002).

Worsening of the fundamental problem in becoming independent and worsening of delusions and behavior?like symptoms of schizophrenia. Before exploring the relationship between the worsening of the former and the worsening of the latter, I will discuss the “preoccupations” and “narrowing of the field of consciousness” based on the matters I focused on in “Problem”. If one encounters situations or events that give rise to the “preoccupations” and “narrowing of one's field of consciousness” that I mentioned and defined in “Problems”, although there may be differences in degree, anyone could potentially fall into these preoccupations and narrowing of one's field of consciousness. It is no exaggeration to say that when young people tackle problems and challenges that involve self-assertion or ego, there is the following tendency. Those are the preoccupations and the narrowing of one's field of consciousness arise in a complicated situation of “the subjectivity, the transitional period to the independence, the values, the logical thinking, and the ego defense. I have conducted numerous studies on “preoccupations”, “narrowing of the field of consciousness”, and indiscriminate murderous intent. But here I will explore the above tendencies for the preoccupations and the narrowing of one's field of consciousness by focusing only on the written and oral statements of the subjects of this study. This subject exhibit the abovementioned tendencies, fixate on own beliefs. He has the “delusions and behavior-like symptoms of schizophrenia”. His written statements are as follows: A, B, C, D (see Note 1). “E7 (--If God really exists, why doesn't he burn down Japan, a city that is even more vicious than Sodom? If God doesn't do anything, then I must burn it down myself. The lives of 10,000 Japanese people are worthless trash, not even worth a single cockroach. I will turn the foolish laughter of the Japanese into the screams of their death throes.)”?

In the above written statements “C and D”, it is recognized that these delusions and actions are developed only from his own perspective, without accepting the persuasion of others. His oral statements are as follows: B, C, D, H, J (see Note 1), “E8 (I heard the boy's voice in my ears--I felt irritated, and I wanted to cover the boy's mouth and throw him into the river. I couldn't imagine it. I had a slight fever, and my arms, shoulders, and neck hurt. I felt very dizzy. I was in pain. I left my part-time job early.)?F (see Note 4), G (see Note 1) (I want to take weapons and barricade myself in a girls' high school I want to execute Kogyal and set it as an example to the world. I want to execute the hostages little by little in front of them. I want to instill fear in them that it will be their turn).

These written statements and oral statements show the tendency toward the “preoccupations”, the “narrowing of the field of consciousness”.

It can be said that the expression “silly laughter” of “E” in the written statement is accompanied by the young man's discomfort. After receiving these written statements, I brought these written statements up in the interview and exchanged words with this young man. He was talking about a man his mother was dating who had been now coming in and out of the house. From his heightened emotion, facial expression, and attitude when he started to say “Japanese silly laughter”, I was convinced that this was directed at me as well. In subsequent interviews, I had the young man sit with his back to the window. And I sat with my back to entrance, and we conducted the interview several times.

There is a clear sense of anger in these written statements toward the country and society at the time this young man wrote these pieces, including the man his mother was dating, Japanese women, compensated dating, adultery, and the “computer-related classes (this young man was taking above classes which were extremely difficult for him)”.It is no exaggeration to say that I, who taught this young man's classes, am included among the "Japanese" in this young man's passage.

During the discussion and consideration (the oral statement N), the young man and I exchanged opinion on the expression “bakawarai (stupid laughter)”. During this discussion, I got that the expression “bakawarai” was rooted in the loud laughter of a man who was dating his mother at the time.

Regarding the things (oral statements E) the young man said in our exchange during this interview, based on my knowledge of the young man, I have inferred the following about the conversion reaction that occurred in the young man. The young man, who was distressed by the thought that his mother, who was in a relationship with the man mentioned above, would give birth to a boy, perceived the intimate behavior of the child and his mother and felt murderous intent toward the child. A conflict arose regarding this murderous intent, and under this conflict, he suppressed the murderous intent, resulting in a conversion reaction.

I have mentioned the “preoccupations” and “narrowing of field of consciousness”. Here I will refer to the pursuit of a relationship in the worsening of this young man's fundamental problems in becoming independent and the worsening of his symptom-like delusions and behavior. The B, C, D, A, and “E” are examples of the written statement that fall under the “main subheading.” The oral statement here is the C, B, D, G, H, J, and F “E”. I examined not only these but also other written statements and oral statements. And I understood and grasped the following three matters.

  • In written statements D and "E" and oral statements G, the worsening of the fundamental problem gives rise to “delusions and behavior-like symptoms of schizophrenia” in the confusion of some complex mix of the followings. Those are reality, “assumptions” and “the negation of guilt over the murderous intent (Freud's defense mechanism)”.
  • In oral statements B, C, D, J, and F, the substitution of murderous intent for a delusion (Freud's defense mechanism) is added to this confusion, resulting in the causal relationship mentioned above.
  • In the written statements and oral statements described below, as the fundamental problem worsens, the preoccupations and narrowing of his field of consciousness become stronger, and the thoughts and words and actions about the preoccupied matter become increasingly influenced by the feelings/emotions(of the accompanied the preoccupied consciousness). The written statements and oral statements here are listed below. Written statements D?“E” as well as A, B, and C, and oral statements B, C, D, G, H, J, and F “E”. Triggers for murderous intent, suppression of murderous intent into action, suppression of murderous delusions.

Regarding the Trigger for Murderous Intent

In oral statements B, the main triggers for murderous intent are his beliefs. His beliefs are as follow. My mother's relationships with the man were adultery, and if I could date a liked girl, I would be able to blow away and get away. But all the girls I like are already in relationships with other male, there's no room for me.

These beliefs led him to his murderous delusions and murderous drawings.

In oral statements C. This young man met a rude girl at his part-time job, then he thought next things. There are only people like that around. My future is dark. If I had an iron bar I would hit her. I can't forgive a rude girl and someone who commits adultery. I endured the situation and went home. Then he put on some heroic music, consciously began and developed a murderous delusion.

On the surface, written statements A appears to have a structure as if our highly information-oriented society and human as a whole (humanity) are what trigger the indiscriminate murderous intent, statement B appears to have a structure as if the country, society, and the masses are what trigger these thoughts and delusions.

However, in these descriptions, it is visible or hidden the deeper structure in which the thoughts and delusions mentioned above are caused by the young man's fundamental problems. The deeper structure of what triggers indiscriminate murderous intent is understood as the psychological mechanism by which the worsening of the underlying problem causes “delusions and behaviors-like symptoms of schizophrenia” as described in the previous “Subheading” section.

Regarding the Suppression of Murderous Intent into Action

In the following oral statement, this young man in the delusional stage looking back on the “delusions and behaviors-like symptoms of schizophrenia”, is suppressing his murderous intent from becoming an action. Oral statements B (But I won't cross the line. It's okay, teacher, If I don't go astray.), F (I would never kill a child. In my mind, I wanted to do it, but I held back... I'm holding myself back with pride. If a kogyaru hurt me I scare of what would happen.

The Kobe killer couldn't hold himself back. I would hold myself back. Kogyaru are different.), G (Execute the kogyaru and make an example of the world. I'm suppressing myself with karma. Recently), J (if I get angry, I'll kill people, in a fantasy. I need to let off some steam.).

Regarding the Suppression of “Murderous Delusions”

The author read the suppression of this delusion from next oral statements’ D. D: --In my head, I would kill rude junior high school girls cruelly with an axe or an iron bar. I got back to the dorm and tried to freshen up by taking a shower, I still daydreamed. After I finished the shower, my back felt stiff, and after my third trip to the toilet, I told myself not to take a shower.

Moreover I read his intention of the suppression of this delusion within this delusion, from following oral statements D. D: I get angry at myself for being bothered by the adultery, and I kick things...When I see a girl with braids or hair type on TV, depending on my mood, I check her hair, face, body, her doing then and shoot to death her with a pistol in my head. I try not to think about killing, but I try to stop.

Improvement and disappearance of delusions and behavior?like symptoms of schizophrenia after examining all of the written statements and oral statements of this young man, I understood that the progress of improvement and disappearance of this symptom-like delusion and behavior has progressed from a worsening stage through a transitional stage to improved and disappeared stage.

The written statements and oral statements of the worsening stage are as follows. The written statements are C, D, A, B, and E. The spoken statements are B, C, D "E" F, G, H, and J. The transitional stage is only oral statements. These statements are listed below. I (My university friends are coming to visit my home A female college student is working part- time. She isn’t braids, but she can handle things reliably. I don't know what's behind her.  I'm less afraid of the toilet, and I don't think there's anything to worry about at this point) K (My part-time job, long hair women (female college student), hasn't come on Saturdays since then. Maybe she hates me. I can't sleep). L (When I mentioned the filthy germs, my mother got angry. It almost went all the way to my mouth, but I held back in the picture, the braids were crossed with a sword. From the mouth, blood was shed. There was no concrete image of the execution). (I want to believe even if I can't believe it. I won't lose my mother. A little bit of germs is okay).

Mostly improvement and disappearance of these delusions and behaviors were also only oral statement, these are listed below. M (Recently, I stopped drawing cruel pictures.) (When I had trouble, I taken it out on my family, especially my mother, I've been too spoiled. I think I'll get away from her). N (I can know very well the pain I've suffered. But I also can know my mother's pain. I've depended too much on her. Every time something bad happens, I take it out on other people. I must change that.). O (I no longer have any preoccupation with kogyaru, and I no longer have cruel fantasies.). A (-). (I went to the employment office, found out about my current store, and started “working part-time” there in late October 2000. I fell in love with a capable and wonderful woman at the workplace, but my love was broken. I want to be someone that someday this person can be proud of knowing me. I have fun helping the staff. When I was in university, I didn't master computers. Even if something unpleasant happens, I put up with it because the customers and it would be a nuisance to the store. I've never taken a day off from work or shut myself in. When something unpleasant happens, I replace it with something else, but I can clearly distinguish between the real world and the fantasy world. Even if I replace something unpleasant with it, I can't get a concrete image of massacre.).

In accordance with Spranger's “verstehen”, I have used the case study “A Young Man's Indiscriminate Murderous Intent” (2002) to confirm the flow of the young man's written and oral statements. Through detailed examination of these, I have attempted to examine my view stated in “Problems” and this case study (2002).

This opinion is that the young man's delusions and behavior-like symptoms of schizophrenia are due to a fundamental problem in his becoming independent, and is not due to schizophrenia, in other words, his delusions and behaviors isn‘t literally a sign of schizophrenia.
