Intermittence of Renewable Energies and Electricity Mix in Morocco: 2030 Scenarios

Abstract

This article explores the challenge of producing electrical energy sustainably in Morocco, in line with global efforts to combat climate change and conserve natural resources. The country has set ambitious goals for integrating renewable energy sources such as wind and solar into its energy mix. However, the intermittency of these sources necessitates a backup system to provide energy storage during times of high renewable output and additional power generation during low output. The article evaluates different scenarios for renewable energy mix and assesses the backup system requirements, CO2 emissions, and investment costs. The findings highlight the need for improved energy storage solutions and the potential for increased reliance on fossil fuels to address the challenges posed by intermittency.
