The Use of Online Recruitment Platforms and Retention Strategies for Employees within the Hospitality and Tourism Industry in the Midwest Region of Ireland

Abstract

Purpose: This research consists of a critical assessment on the extent of Online Recruitment Platforms and Retention Strategies (ORPRS) in Hospitality and Tourism (H&T) businesses within the Midwest Region of Ireland. The purpose of this research is to conduct a strategy for ORPRS to reduce turnover rates, while exploring industry trends and improving its future. To provide context, this research analysed best practice examples in relation to ORPRS namely; accessibility, accommodation, activities, amenities and attractions (5A’s) sector in the H&T industry.

Methodology: The data was gathered from 25 businesses on Indeed and LinkedIn spaced out over a three week period from H&T businesses for content analysis, followed by 14 interviews with Human Resource/General Managers (HR&GM) in June 2023 in the Midwest Region of Ireland. A second approach will be attempted in June 2024.

Findings: The findings reveal that HR&GM were able to identify the current/future issues and implement a strategy to be put in place for their business to reduce turnover.

Originality of the Research: This research addresses the effects of ORPRS and turnover issues in H&T businesses that demonstrates the challenges faced by businesses that differentiate from other industries.
