Abstract

SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis in the field of tourism has emerged as a valuable tool for comprehensively evaluating the internal and external factors influencing a particular destination. The study evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT), aiming to offer insights into its current status and propose strategies for a sustainable and thriving community in Sitio Darayaw, Panaytayan, Mansalay Oriental Mindoro. This SWOT analysis comprehensively explores three key initiatives—Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages, Community-Based Homestay Program, and Community-Led Conservation Projects-to uncover their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Rich biodiversity and cultural immersion opportunities characterize the Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages, while the Homestay Program provides an authentic cultural experience. Community-Led Conservation Projects leverage local knowledge and commitment. The analysis suggests strategic implications and recommendations for each initiative, emphasizing responsible tourism practices, infrastructure development, safety measures, and community engagement. The findings contribute to a strategic roadmap, offering insights for the sustainable development of Sitio Darayaw while preserving its natural and cultural heritage. This holistic approach integrates on-site observations, resident interviews, and a thorough analysis of existing initiatives, providing a foundation for informed decision-making in the pursuit of sustainable tourism.

Introduction

This study utilized the use of SWOT analysis, underscore on a significant assessment of three strategic initiatives-Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages, Community-Based Homestay Program, and Community-Led Conservation Projects-to unravel their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The objectives of this study is to identify strengths that set Sitio Darayaw apart, acknowledging areas that may require attention, uncovering opportunities for growth, and recognizing potential challenges. From the study of Indrani and Gobinda it was established that the Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages promise to showcase the region's natural wonders and provide thrilling experiences for enthusiasts. Simultaneously, the Community- Based Homestay Program offers a genuine immersion into local life, fostering connections between visitors and indigenous communities. Complementing these, the Community-Led Conservation Projects embody a commitment to preserving the delicate balance between nature and culture. Moreover, in unfolding the tourism of Sitio Darayaw's potential, the analysis seeks not only to unveil its intrinsic strengths and promising opportunities but also to confront the challenges and threats that could hinder its sustainable development. Through a comprehensive evaluation of these key initiatives, this analysis aspires to contribute to a strategic roadmap that ensures the prosperity in tourism of Sitio Darayaw [1].

Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the study are strategically aligned to comprehensively assess the current state and future tourism potential of Sitio Darayaw. The SWOT analysis aims to identify and highlight internal and external factorsthat distinguish the research area, encompassing its unique culture, community cohesion and their existing resources. Furthermore, the study seeks to determine and acknowledge such as infrastructure gap and potential social challenges that may require attention and intervention for sustainable tourism development. Additionally, the analysis aims to uncover external opportunities available to Sitio Darayaw that could include untapped economic prospects and potential collaborations that can enhance the community. Besides that, this analysis aims to recognize and mitigate potential threat posed by external factors, including environmental risks or social changes that may impact the community negatively. This SWOT analysis in Sitio Darayaw encompass the identification of internal strengths and weaknesses, exploration of external opportunities, and mitigation of potential threats. Through these focused objectives, the analysis seeks to provide a general understanding of Sitio Darayaw's strategic landscape, offering insights that can inform decision-making processes and contribute to the sustainable tourism development of this unique community.

Materials and Methods

To construct a comprehensive understanding of Sitio Darayaw's potential for sustainable tourism, a thorough approach to data collection was undertaken [2]. The foundation of this analysis rests upon a different source, including firsthand insights derived from on-site observations with the nuanced perspectives articulated by the local residents. In combination with on-site immersion, structured interviews were conducted with the local residents, investigating into their perspectives on eco-tourism, homestay programs, and conservation initiatives. These conversations aimed not only to extract valuable insights but also to foster a collaborative dialogue, allowing the community's voice to resonate within the analysis. The qualitative of these interviews offers a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between the community and the proposed sustainable tourism ventures. Complementing these qualitative methods, an analysis of existing initiatives in eco-tourism, homestay programs, and conservation projects formed an integral component of the data collection process. By analyzing past and ongoing endeavors, this study sought to distill lessons learned, successes, and challenges faced by similar initiatives. This serves as a valuable compass, guiding the present analysis towards informed decision-making and strategic planning. The establishment of criteria for evaluation was a critical aspect of the methodological framework. Incorporating factors deemed vital to the success of sustainable tourism initiatives in Sitio Darayaw. These criteria encompassed the potential for cultural immersion, the scale of adventure activities offered, the quality of hospitality extended, the efficacy of conservation efforts, and the depth of community engagement. This structured approach facilitated a systematic evaluation of each initiative, allowing for a nuanced understanding of their individual strengths and areas that needs improvement. Study Area

Aquino and Porter [3] noted that Philippines has become a sought after destination for its warm hospitality, stunning landscape and diverse attraction and cultural richness. Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro is a home for indigenous people of Mindoro, Mangyan hold rich cultures and local traditions that make the town allure tourists.

Sitio Darayaw, cradled within the serene landscapes of Barangay Panaytayan in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, unfolds as a hidden sanctuary poised for sustainable tourism. Wrapped by verdant mountains and pristine surroundings, this secluded haven hides a wealth of potential waiting to be harnessed.

In the heart of Sitio Darayaw lies a harmonious convergence of nature's abundance and cultural richness. Its diverse ecosystem, characterized by biodiversity and natural scenic landscape, sets the stage for a distinctive tourism experience [4]. Beyond the scenic landscapes, the indigenous Mangyan communities showcase unique culture, adding depth and authenticity to the tourist encounter. This analysis undertakings to reveal the relationship between nature and culture, recognizing the interaction that shapes Sitio Darayaw's unique identity.

Results and Discussion

The findings of this analysis revolve around three key initiatives, each analyzed through the SWOT analysis. These initiatives, pivotal to the tourism potential development. This are divided to reveal their internal strengths, weaknesses, external opportunities, and potential threats. The discussions aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of each initiative's strategic landscape, understanding on the factors that influence their success or present challenges.

Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages

Strengths:

The great potential for Eco-Tourism and Adventure in Sitio Darayaw will showcase the region's rich biodiversity and natural beauty, cul tural immersion opportunities, and diverse adventure activities. The off-the-beaten-path appeal, community engagement, and scenic photography opportunities contribute to the overall allure. The scenic beauty enhances the homestay experience, fostering a connection with the environment.

Weaknesses:

Challenges arise in terms of limited infrastructure, accessibility, safety concerns, and seasonal limitations.

Dependency on seasonal variability and limited amenities present hurdles to a seamless visitor experience.

Opportunities:

Undiscovered beauty, rich biodiversity, cultural experiences, and various adventure activities present significant opportunities. The potential for economic development through tourism, educational tourism, and photography tourism can be harnessed. Collaborations, partnerships, and preservation efforts with regulatory support can enhance the sustainable development of the initiatives.

Threats:      

Environmental degradation, overcrowding, cultural erosion, and regulatory challenges pose threats to the initiatives. Effective management and regulatory support are crucial for mitigating these challenges.

The strengths identified within the Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages create a foundation for a captivating overview. The unique biodiversity, cultural immersion opportunities, and off-the-beaten-path appeal position Sitio Darayaw as an attractive destination for tourists seeking authentic and unconventional experiences as concluded in the study of Onuso [5]. In contrast to more popular destinations, Sitio Darayaw's off-the-beaten-path emerges as a significant comparative advantage. Sitio Darayaw's secluded charm promises a more intimate and genuine experience. This comparison highlights the potential to capture a market segment seeking a departure from conventional tourist trails. Strategic considerations for the Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages revolve around responsible tourism practices, infrastructure development, and safety measures. Responsible tourism should be prioritized to ensure the preservation of the area's unique environment and cultural heritage. Infrastructure development is crucial to overcome current limitations and provide visitors with a comfortable and safe experience. Community-Based Homestay Program

Strengths:

Challenges related to infrastructure, accessibility, safety, and economic vulnerability can impede the program's success. Balancing cultural sensitivity and resolving potential land use conflicts are critical considerations.

The Homestay Program emerges as a reflection of a broader trend in the travel industry—a growing preference among travelers for authentic and culturally immersive experiences. In the area of mass tourism, the Homestay Program in Sitio Darayaw aligns perfectly with the aspirations of a sensitive tourists seeking more than just conventional accommodations. The program's authenticity and cultural immersion resonate with the desires of modern travelers, making it a valuable asset for sustainable tourism. When compared with commercial accommodations, the Homestay Program distinguishes itself by offering a more genuine connection with the local culture. Unlike standardized hotels, the homestay experience provides visitors with an opportunity to embed themselves in the daily lives of the indigenous Mangyan communities. This comparison underscores the program's unique selling proposition-the ability to facilitate meaningful interactions between guests and hosts, fostering a deeper understanding of local customs and traditions. Strategic considerations for the Community-Based Homestay Program underscore the importance of infrastructure development, enhanced safety measures, and the promotion of its distinctive cultural offerings [6]. The participation of the Buhid Tribe in possible conservation projects aligns with global trend of empowering indigenous communities in environmental stewardship. Incorporating traditional knowledge and community involvement will lead to successful and culturally sensitive conservation efforts. Additionally, fostering partnerships with external entities can provide the necessary support and resources for the long-term sustainability of conservation initiatives.

Conclusion and Recommendation

To take advantage on the identified strengths and address the challenges, specific recommendations are proposed. The development of sustainable adventure packages that harmonize with the natural surroundings and cultural fabric is essential. Promoting cultural sensitivity among visitors is vital to avoid potential conflicts and ensure a respectful engagement with the local community as determined in their study by Zgolli and Zaiem [8]. Establishing partnerships for conservation not only aligns with responsible tourism but also contributes to the long-term preservation of Sitio Darayaw's unique attributes. These recommendations lay the foundation for a sustainable approach to the development of Eco-Tourism and Adventure Packages in Sitio Darayaw, emphasizing a balance between growth and preservation. To elevate the Homestay Program to its full potential, specific recommendations are proposed. Developing partnerships for marketing can expand the program's reach and attract a broader audience. Archille and Fiorillo [9] established in their study that providing training initiatives on cultural preservation not only benefits the local community but also ensures that guests engage respectfully with the indigenous traditions. Improving accessibility to Sitio Darayaw is essential to mitigate challenges related to reaching the remote location, thereby enhancing the program's viability for a wider scale of travelers. These recommendations aim to support the Homestay Program as a basis of Sitio Darayaw's sustainable tourism initiatives.To enhance the effectiveness and permanency of Community-Led Conservation Projects, specific recommendations are proposed. Developing educational programs that convey the importance of conservation not only within the community but also to external stakeholders can contribute to increased awareness and support Samal and Dash [10]. Securing funding through collaborations with governmental, non-governmental, and international organizations can provide the necessary resources for comprehensive projects. Addressing regulatory challenges, particularly those related to indigenous land rights and governmental regulations, is crucial for navigating the conservation. These recommendations are geared towards ensuring the success and resilience of community-led conservation efforts in Sitio Darayaw.
