Abstract

Academic performance measures student achievement in various academic fields of study. This study is based on the effect of the Internet on student academic performance, in which the educators use the Internet as a device to modify the academic technique inside the study room to improve students’ performance. The study aims to investigate the impact of the Internet on the academic performance of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology students.

This research employs both descriptive and analytical statistics. The Google form questionnaire responses of 817 students were distributed. The questionnaires were distributed using a simple random sampling method among eight faculties, and the data collected was analyzed using ordinal logistic regression. Ordinal logistic regression was performed on the data, and the goodness of fit test was used to determine whether the model fits the data and model-fitting information was used to test the model's validity.

It was observed from the analysis that all three identified variables, (Students' addictiveness to the internet, Exposure of students to the internet, and Use of the internet) were statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) in influencing the academic performance of students.

The following recommendations were made from the findings: school management should educate students on how to use the internet efficiently for academic purposes rather than just social media and should consider how they will sustain the level of exposure of students to the use of the internet so that it does not get out of hand in the future; and school management also should consider how they will improve or encourage students to use the internet to give them  greater influence in their academic performance.
